Plymouth has been featured in the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy, cementing its reputation as a national leader in defence, advanced research and development, maritime, and nuclear sectors.
Recently designated by the Defence Minister as the National Centre of Marine Autonomy, Plymouth is home to a vibrant cluster of organisations and initiatives shaping the future of the UK’s defence and marine technology landscape. Plymouth is home to the University of Plymouth’s Cyber-SHIP lab, a £3.2 million hardware based research platform for maritime, information, and operational technology research that is focusing on the future of marine autonomy and cybersecurity; Smart Sound, the UK’s premier proving area for businesses to develop advanced marine technologies, with over 1000 square kilometres of highly monitored and deconflicted water; and Turnchapel Wharf, where a range of businesses continue to pioneer the development, assessment, and certification of new autonomous systems.
The Ministry of Defence has underlined Plymouth’s strategic importance with a £4.4 billion investment in His Majesty’s Naval Base Devonport over the next decade, supporting critical nuclear submarine programmes and ongoing surface ship operations. This investment ensures Plymouth remains at the heart of the UK’s defence and security infrastructure.
As part of the government’s Freeport programme, Plymouth and South Devon have secured Freeport status, unlocking £25 million in capital funding and a suite of incentives to attract further investment, boost innovation, and create high-value jobs in the region.
With defence projects extending to 2070, a rapidly expanding nuclear workforce, and its new status as the UK’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy, Plymouth is central to national security, marine innovation, and economic growth.
